Watchful Overnight Care

Aged care services aren’t only needed during the day—overnight care is a crucial part of support for many older Australians and their families. On this page, you will find information about overnight care with The CareSide, including FAQs and details on how to use a Home Care Package to secure the best overnight care for your needs.

What is Overnight Care?

Most older Australians today prefer to remain in their own homes rather than move into a nursing home or residential care facility. In-home care services and government-funded Home Care Packages (HCP) make that possible, and often, care plans need to provide 360-degree support to ensure care recipients are safe and comfortable in every facet of life.

Overnight care services—sometimes referred to as sleepover support services—are a critical part of the process, particularly for family members and loved ones who have taken on a caregiving role for an elder.

It’s no secret that consistently getting up overnight to care for someone can be exhausting. Carer burnout in Australia is a pressing issue, and loss of sleep has a serious impact on the health and happiness of unpaid carers across the country.

It’s also true that some older people face increased risks at nighttime, especially with falling due to diminished vision or disorientation. Trip hazards throughout the home can heighten the likelihood of accidents, and falls can result in weeks or months of hospitalisation and rehabilitation.

With The CareSide, overnight care services begin with a free consultation. During this consultation, one of our skilled registered nurses assesses the care recipient for fall risk and the home for trip hazards.

Our recommendations for practical solutions—such as safety rails—can minimise the risk of overnight accidents. However, professional overnight care might be necessary for families seeking additional assistance and peace of mind.

Frequently Asked Questions

Active overnight care is for care recipients who require intensive care and assistance several times during the night. Generally speaking, active care clients are people who:

  • Have mental health needs and are in danger of getting hurt

  • Need regular medication during the night

  • Get confused between day and night and need regular assurance that all is well

  • Need palliative care
Inactive overnight care is a type of passive support for care recipients who require limited assistance overnight, such as safely going to the toilet. Inactive overnight care recipients are people who:
  • Need basic medication, such as pain relief
  • Require assistance getting back to bed due to disorientation or confusion
  • Tend to wake carers because they need help settling back to sleep
  • Need comfort during the night, such as a quick reassuring chat, a cup of tea, or a warm glass of milk to calm feelings of anxiety
With inactive overnight care, The CareSide’s support workers sleep between 10pm – 6am and get up to assist clients once per night. If more care is required, active care is more appropriate for your care needs.

Meal Preparation

Our caregivers prepare the evening meal for both the client and their primary carer, ensuring adherence to any dietary guidelines. The next morning, they prepare breakfast for the client and their carer, allowing carers to navigate through their morning routines without interruptions.

Hygiene Routine

Our caregivers also assist with toileting, showering, teeth and denture cleaning, grooming and bedtime preparations. They repeat the same routine the following morning, enabling primary carers to enjoy a full night of sleep and start mornings in a relaxed and refreshed manner.

We adapt to your needs.

If you already have a carer or know someone who you’d like in that role, we can make it happen. We can employ caregivers from other providers since that is within your rights under home care legislation, and we can also onboard and certify family members and friends if appropriate. We are here to meet your needs—not the other way around.
