NDIS Capital Supports
About NDIS Capital Supports
Your NDIS Capital Supports budget is intended to fund higher-cost devices for assistive technology, equipment, home modifications, and vehicle modifications. The need for these types of expenses must be directly related to the disability of the individual. This category may also be used for advance payment of disability services known as a ‘one-off’ payment. Capital Supports may also include funding for Specialist Disability Accommodation for participants who require special housing because of their disability.
The funds within the Capital Supports budget can only be used for their specific stated purpose and cannot be used to pay for anything else. Many of these expenses require specialised assessments from a variety of professional service providers and quotes from suppliers. Be sure to find out if a quote and prior approval are needed before making any formal agreements or purchases. Your NDIS Support Coordinator or Local Area Coordinator can answer many of your questions about your Capital Supports budget and provide guidance on how to request and submit quotes for the approval process.
The NDIS Capital Supports budget has two support categories: Assistive Technology and Home Modifications.
Assistive technologies are physical supports. Funds from this category are used to purchase items, equipment, devices, or product systems used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of an individual with disabilities. Assistive technologies help to do things that would otherwise be difficult, unsafe, or impossible. This can be related to mobility, personal care, communication, or recreational inclusion. They may be simple and low-cost, such as walking canes, wheelchairs, voice recorders, shower chairs, or communication boards. Or they might be complex and more costly such as power-assisted wheelchairs, vehicle modifications, environmental control units, hearing aids and cochlear implants, voice prosthesis devices, or communication equipment for deafblind individuals.
Home modifications are physical changes to your home and the surrounding environment to ensure safe and easy access for individuals with disabilities. Modifications include things such as the installation of a handrail in a bathroom, widening doorways for wheelchairs, construction of access ramps and sidewalks, ceiling lifts, and kitchen and bathroom modifications for wheelchair or other disability access.
